ALL ABOUT THE ANCIENT GODDESSES
Astarte/Aphrodite - Phoenician Goddess of Love, Passion & Fertility
Astarte is the Phoenician goddess of love and fertility, later becoming Aphrodite in Greek religions, and Ashtoroth in others. Her colors are pink and red, her sacred day is Friday and she is an ancient prototype of the Virgin Mary. She was the creating, preserving and destroying Goddess worshipped by all Indo-European cultures. She is known as the Queen of the Stars, Mother of all Souls and the Lily was her flower.
Astarte was also known as Tanit symbolized as the White sow with the Dove as her sacred bird. The colors for Tanit were red and white and the Acacia and Tamarisk are her trees. Occasionally, Astarte is depicted with the head of a lioness; in other representations she stands small-breasted and naked on the back of a lioness, with a lotus and a mirror in one hand and 2 snakes in the other.
The worship of Astarte spread throughout the ancient world. She was worshipped by the Philistines, the Greeks, the Romans, the Sicilians, and in many other parts of Europe and Africa. In Norse mythology, she was Freya, Indrani in Hindu, Danu in Celtic, and Hathor in the Ancient Egyptian tradition.
Demeter - Greek Goddess of Abundance, Agriculture and Prosperity
Perhaps the most "human" goddess, the Greek goddess, Demeter represents the powerful bond between mother and daughter. She was worshipped in Greece as early as 1500 BCE to insure great crops and harvest. The highest mystical truths regarding time, suffering, and spiritual regeneration were embodied in Demeter's mystery religion, which was widely influential on the Roman Empire. She is the goddess of agriculture, abundance, and prosperity. Her days are Wednesday and Saturday.
Brighid - Celtic Goddess of Healing
Brighid, the Celtic goddess of healing is also revered as the Triple Goddess of the great Celtic empire of Brigantia, which included parts of Spain, France and the British Isles. Brighid held many roles in the pantheon including the great healer, resolving or avoiding health problems, great balance, female sage and protector of poets. Unable to eradicate the cult of Brighid (pronounced Breed), the Catholic church made Brighid a saint, saying she was a nun who founded a convent at Kildare.
But the convent was known for its heathenish miracles and evidences of fertility magic. Cows never went dry; flowers and shamrocks sprang up in her footprints, eternal Spring reigned in her bower. Her Crosses are made for the protection of homes. Brigit's snake comes out of the mound in which it hibernates, and its behavior is thought to determine the length of the remaining period of frost. She is symbolized by a flame and healing water. it is said that her sacred flame was tended by virgin priestesses and passed onto the Catholic sisters, burned for ages until doused by decree of the Bishop in 1220 A.D.
In Vodou lore, ManMan Brigette, wife of Baron Samedi, was adapted into the Vodou pantheon when Baron Samedi fell in love with her and made her his queen of the underworld. She is renowned for justice, litigation, fairness, fierce protector of children and assisting in all transitions.
Inanna - Sumerian Queen of Heaven and Mother of Life
Inanna is the Queen of Heaven and Earth and the Great Mother who rids us of negativity and feeds us with new life and energy. The goddess Inanna is regarded as the "Queen of Heaven" and mother of all life. She hails from ancient Sumeria and was considered to be the source of the Earth's life blood. She was later called "Ishtar" in other cultures. She is the goddess of birth, fertility, sexuality, healing, the giver of life and the destroyer if need be. Her symbols are the moon, the serpent, the eight pointed star, the caduceus and the double-headed axe both represented her power to bestow and withdraw life. She filled the wells, rivers and springs with her blood and has been honored as far back as 2,000 B.C.E. Juniper is known to be her sacred tree.
Hecate - Goddess of the Moon, Magick and the Underworld
Hecate is often called the goddess of Witchcraft and Magick. Hecate is renowned for increasing psychic powers, granting magical powers in spell work, dream interpretations and aids in communication with the dead. Hecate is the Goddess of the Moon, of the Underworld, of the Crossroads and of Magick. Her messenger is an owl and her sacred animal is a dog. Her tree is the willow. She is the Greek goddess of the crossroads, the world of the dead and considered to be the goddess of Witches as well, in fact, during the middle ages, she was known as the Queen of the Ghostworld, or Queen of Witches. A key, rope, and dagger are her symbols. With the key to the underworld, Hecate unlocks the secrets of the occult mysteries and knowledge of afterlife. The rope symbolizes the umbilical cord of rebirth and renewal. The Dagger or Athame is a symbol of ritual power. The appearance of black howling dogs at night meant that Hecate was near, and their barking, announced her approach.
